Do I really have to pay tax and duty?
Yes, if under the Customs regulations of your country the contents of your shipment are dutiable of taxable. In many countries, Customs permits the duty/tax free entry of shipments below a certain value (de minimis value).
For Turkey, Customs clearance regulations are as follows:
Shipments for personal use under EU150 in value will not incur duty and will be cleared by carrier's declaration.
Shipments from EU150 to EU1500 and are for personal use will be cleared by verbal declaration with payment of 18% (EU origin) or 20% (rest of world origin) of shipment value
Shipments over EU1500 or commercial shipments must be cleared formally with a customs broker for an additional charge of EU210 (US300) and applicable duty and VAT. Carrier will contact customer to obtain authorization to clear import on his/her behalf
Please keep in mind that there are heavy fines or even criminal proceedings for anyone trying to evade import tax.
All imported goods must be declared to customs - irrespective of whether the goods are new or used or whether you are buying them for yourself or as a gift.
BE AWARE: Some unscrupulous overseas suppliers openly advertise on their web-sites that they will either mis-describe items or under-declare their value in order to evade customs charges. However, you as the "Importer" are legally responsible for the accurate declaration of the goods and their value for assessment of tax and duty in the importing country. So although the seller may produce a commercial invoice, you are legally responsible for the information on the import customs declaration and for any customs charges that may be due. This means that if you purchase goods from these suppliers, and the declaration is found to be false or misleading, you may be liable to financial penalties or even criminal prosecution and having your goods confiscated by Customs.
