I'll start by saying I don't have any problems or complaints about the actual lube- it's fantastic, actually. However, being an automotive technician, I can confidently say this is simply a synthetic (I hope anyway) 140wt gear oil and nothing more. If you've ever smelled gear oil, it has an incredibly distinctive smell- unmistakeable and significantly different than other petroleum based lubricants. That being said, $15 bucks for 4 oz. of synthetic gear oil is an absurd price to pay when you can buy a quart (32 fluid ounces) of 75W140 mobil 1 for about 19 bucks here on amazon. I've just paid 15 bucks for what amounts to be $2.36 worth of gear oil in a ~2 dollar bottle with a .50 cent label stuck to it. Ouch. Lesson learned. This is of course, my personal opinion based on my experience with many different kinds of lubricants and I could very well be wrong. It'll take lab-quality testing to convince me otherwise, however.
Update 3/2014: 1K miles on the initial lube and my chain is still quiet and well lubricated- most excellent. It's messy, however, and have had to wipe excess from my chain a few times, but no big deal- doesn't really bother me. The one thing I really hate about this stuff is the smell. I'm one of those crazies who keeps my bike inside (the house) and this lube just stinks. The smell is so strong, I can even smell it out on the road. Up to you to decide if the negatives outweigh the so-far excellent performance of the lube, but for me, I can't stand the smell and with so many other good lubes on the market that don't stink, I've found myself looking for an alternative.
